Travel information

Rhodes, is an island that belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago in the southeast of Aegean Sea. The cruise ships disembark their passengers in Rhodes city, the capital of the island.

The Rhodes island due to its strategic position has been favored by many cultures. In classical times the state of Rhodes was formed by three city-state: Ialysos, Lindos and Kamiros. It was his heyday, which lasted more than 300 years from 408 BC. In this period was built the famous Colossus of Rhodes, by the sculptor Chares of Lindos . The statue was completed in 282 BC and was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC.

Since 164 BC the island came under the control of the Roman Empire. To the fall of Roman Empire came under the control of the Byzantine Empire. It remained under Byzantine control until about the 13th century with some brief interruption.

In 1309 the Knights Hospitallers established themselves on the island, as heirs of the Order of the Knights Templar, after the destruction and persecution of the Templars from 1307 to 1312. The Knights Hospitallers remained on the island about 200 years, they created a system defensive spectacular that endures to this day, being recognized as world heritage

In 1523 the Knights lost control of the island, leaving it under the control of the Ottoman Empire. In 1912, Italian troops took control of Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands. Ottoman period buildings were demolished to restore the city of knights. The Italians made great works of infrastructure and restoration. After the Second World War was united to Greece in 1948.

If this is the first time what you travel to Rhodes, the most common is see Rhodes city and visit its attractions. Especially because the ancient city of Rhodes is a world heritage and there are many interesting things to visit, and is difficult to see Rhodes city and another place at the same day in the hours that we have. If in the future you choose return here, in another cruise ship, you can choose to visit other places on the island as Lindos, Ialysos, Kamiros or any of its excellent beaches ... Another choice that you have is to travel to Rhodes and stay several days.

Whatever it is what you go to see.... you enjoy .
